Generators for Data Centres

Industrial generators are an essential component of backup power infrastructure, supplying the energy required when the utility grid is unavailable.

Product Description

Data centres support digital services that need to remain available around the clock, from business applications and cloud platforms to public administration systems. A power outage can affect IT equipment, cooling systems and access to hosted services.

How do generators work with UPS systems?

In a typical configuration, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems maintain power to connected loads between a utility outage and the generators taking over. The generators start automatically and support longer periods of operation, depending on fuel reserves and refuelling arrangements.

The two systems fulfil complementary roles. Continuity depends on coordination between generators, UPS systems, automatic controls and electrical distribution. System sizing must account for both IT equipment and essential supporting systems, particularly cooling.

What matters when selecting generators for a data centre?

Selecting a solution starts with an assessment of electrical loads and availability requirements. Key considerations include:

  • Power capacity and response to load changes. Total demand, load steps, equipment starting requirements and interaction with UPS systems must all be assessed. Voltage and frequency stability matter alongside rated power. Rehlko technical documentation
  • Redundancy and maintainability. The configuration must account for equipment unavailability and planned maintenance. An N+1 architecture, for example, includes one additional unit beyond the number required to support the design load.
  • Runtime. Fuel tank capacity is determined by the expected load, required operating duration and refuelling logistics.
  • Integration and expansion. Automatic controls, synchronisation, monitoring and the ability to add capacity must align with the data centre’s overall architecture.
  • Installation conditions. Ventilation, exhaust routing, ambient temperature, noise and service access influence equipment configuration and placement.

Testing and maintenance support availability

Backup power system performance must be verified before commissioning and periodically throughout its operating life. Load testing and transfer sequence checks help assess starting, load acceptance and coordinated equipment operation.

Preventive maintenance includes checking starting batteries, cooling circuits, fuel and automatic controls. Inspection schedules are established in line with manufacturer recommendations and project requirements.

Best Tools’ experience in data centre backup power

Over more than 20 years of operation, Best Tools Company has installed backup generators with a combined capacity exceeding 50 MW in data centres across Romania. The company has contributed to numerous projects, both as consortium leader and as the contractor responsible for implementing backup power systems, and delivered the first Tier III data centre within Romania’s public administration.

As a Rehlko partner and official distributor in Romania, Best Tools integrates generators from a global manufacturer with a dedicated data centre power portfolio. Rehlko develops solutions encompassing generators, control systems and electrical infrastructure for this application. Rehlko data centre solutions
